MMF Creative Writing Workshop Number 2

In February 2018 the Miles Morland Foundation held their second creative writing course. Once again, the course was led by Giles Foden, award winning author of ‘The Last King of Scotland’ and Creative Writing Professor at the University of East Anglia. Michela Wrong, journalist, author and MMF consultant, facilitated several discussions, primarily focusing on non-fiction writing in Africa.

Like last year the workshop was held on the beautiful Bulago island on Lake Victoria, Uganda. The week began with writing theory sessions, with afternoons left free for reading, writing and exploring the island. As the week progressed, each writer’s work was critiqued by Giles, Michela and members of the group.

The writers were encouraged to draw inspiration from the island and, following the success of the writing exercise last year, we devoted a day to walking, meeting and interviewing inhabitants and taking in the beautiful setting. Everyone’s pieces were read and discussed the following day.

We had a talented and engaging group of writers for our second workshop and were once again all impressed by the standard of writing demonstrated. The writers were:

Christine Odeph (Kenya)
Lillian Akampurira Aujo (Uganda)
Mhla Ncube (Zimbabwe)
Nkiacha Atemnkeng (Cameroon)
Otosirieze Obi-Young (Nigeria)
Sandisile Tshuma (South Africa)
Tamantha Hammerschlag
Tsholofelo Wesi (South Africa)
Wairimu Muriithi (Kenya)

We are delighted to have had such a successful second workshop and look forward to hosting our third early next year.
