Morland Writing Scholarships Shortlist 2020

This year we received 992 entries, over 300 more than last year. They came from 30 different countries. Selecting the shortlist was a difficult task. Although the list is decided on a combination of literary merit and the book proposal, we also, when deciding between submissions of equal merit, try to favour writers at an early stage in their careers over established writers. We are delighted established writers apply and we have given many scholarships to them but for them we set the bar a little higher. Morland African Writing Scholarships 2020 The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2020 Morland Writing Scholarships for African writers will open for entries on Wednesday 1st July. Morland Writing Scholarships for 2019 The judges met yesterday to decide on the four new Morland Writing Scholars for 2019. This was another record year for entries with almost 700 submissions. The 2019 Morland Writing Scholars are: Gloria Mwaniga Odari – Kenya Hawa Jande Golakai – Liberia Nnamdi Oguike – Nigeria Parselelo ole Kantai – Kenya The winners each receive a grant of ₤18,000 to allow them to take a year off to write a book. Morland Writing Scholarships – Judges The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce our Judges’ Panel for 2019. This year we have two new faces on the panel of three. It was time to refresh the panel but our decision was made easier by the Caine Prize nicking Ellah Allfrey and Femi Terry. We felt that having them judging both Caine and us would be too incestuous. The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2018 Morland Writing Scholarships. Of the twenty names, five are from Nigeria, four from Kenya, four from South Africa and one each from Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Somalia and Zimbabwe.
