Morland Writing Scholars listed in top 28 best African reads of 2018

Quartz Africa recently published an article listing the 28 best books they’d read in 2018 by African writers. We were delighted to see that Morland writing scholar, Simone Haysom’s, book The Last Words of Rowan du Preez, written during her scholarship year, was one of those chosen.

The book is published by Jonathan Ball and focuses on the murder of Rowan du Preez and specifically the woman accused; activist Angy Peter. Simone spent four years researching and has produced a tautly told court-room drama that explores this fascinating case as well as the wider issue of policing in the townships of South Africa.

We were also pleased to see that another one of our scholars, Akwaeke Emezi, was listed alongside Simone for her highly acclaimed book Freshwater.
