Morland Writing Scholarships Shortlist 2018

The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2018 Morland Writing Scholarships. Of the twenty names, five are from Nigeria, four from Kenya, four from South Africa and one each from Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Somalia and Zimbabwe. Choosing the shortlist seems to get harder every year. We had fewer bad entries this year and the good ones are exceptionally good. We had over 550 entries, our highest number to date, with writers applying from 27 countries. Morland Writing Scholarships 2018 The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2018 Morland Writing Scholarships for African writers will open for entries on Saturday 30th June.   Morland Writing Scholarships for 2017 The judges met on 4th December to decide on the four new Morland Writing Scholars for 2017. We had a record entry of 550 submissions and a short-list of 21. The standard was so high and the competition so fierce that the judges couldn’t decide on the best four so we agreed to award five Scholarships this year. Of the twenty-one names, six are from South Africa, four each from Nigeria and Kenya, two from Cameroon and one each from Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Gambia and Botswana. Over the past two years it has supported literary festivals in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Somaliland; cultural initiatives in east, west, central and southern Africa; London’s Film Africa festival, the Caine Prize for African Writing, several African educational initiatives and the new Rhodes scholarships for Africans. The Foundation runs a yearly African writing scholarship scheme, see our MMF Writing Scholarships page, which aims to give three fiction writers and one non-fiction writer the financial freedom to complete an English-language book. Morland Writing Scholarships 2016 We have four brilliant new winners of Morland Writing Scholarships: · Abdul Adan – Somalia · Ayesha Harruna Attah – Ghana · Lidudumalingani Mqombothi – South Africa · Nneoma Ike-Njoku – Nigeria The three fiction winners each receive a grant of ₤18,000 to allow them to take a year off to write a book. Ayesha Harruna Attah won a non-fiction award of £27,000 to be paid over a year and a half to allow her additional time for research.
